We've all heard how important it is to back up your computer on a regular basis but nothing puts your heart in your throat than waking up in the morning and your computer is dead. I know. It happened to me today. Luckily for me, I store my crucial data (i.e. our footage) on external drives (I think we have something like 20 terabytes of storage and that's almost filled) that I back up regularly and I'm able to limp along and make this week's pattern. However, I've lost access to the applications I use so I can't edit a photo for the posterframe this week. Sorry Dan; I'll put it up when I get things working again. Anyway, its not the end of the world and I should be back up to full speed in a couple of weeks. In the mean time, please bear with us. We should still be able to make our weekly posts so please keep checking back.

Thanks everyone!

I thought folks might like to see a couple pics of one of our sets. Its always surprising how different things look when you see what was left out of the shot. So, here are a couple of pics from our shoot in Idaho Falls this spring.

As you can see, we use a professional light set up and HD Cameras to originate all of our footage. This lets us work on quite a variety of jobs. For more info on that check out the Reel Action Media, LLC site.

Editing, Editing, Editing...

There's a fair amount of work that goes into making videos/movies that most people don't think about. The fun part is going and recording cool new patterns and techniques demonstrated by some really great and interesting people. The real work starts when you get the footage home. We use HVX200 HD cameras that record to flash media. The footage needs to be logged and captured to a hard drive and then I need to cut it. We use two cameras for every shoot so the footage from each needs to be synched up and then the cutting begins. Depending on the time of the pattern, any interruptions, broken threads, misplaced materials, technical difficulties, and certain people crunching sunflower seeds, the edits range from simple and straightforward to meticulous cutting, pasting, covering, hiding, tweeking, and performing magic. We do 52 patterns a year which means a lot of editing. I haven't even finished the patterns from our shoot in April and we have a total of 19 hours of patterns on our servers with more to come. In the end, though some times tedious, it actually can be pretty rewarding trying to put out the highest quality production available. And its even better that we can provide it for free.

As always, let us know what you think about edits, website, any mistakes, etc in the comments section of the various patterns. We'd love to generate some constructive discussion.

Happy tying and check out our latest patterns!

Welcome to our new blog! If you are a regular reader you've already noticed our new look and feel. This is hopefully just the beginning of the new stuff we add to our site. This blog is the second step. Here we'll post news on what we are working on, new products, and any contests we run. As a small business, we are constantly overworked and underfished so we can't guarantee and set schedule on this blog like we can on the weekly patterns we post but please feel free to subscribe to our RSS feed (on the right). In the next few months, we hope to add a store but more importantly, we hope to have an additional blog that will focus on conservation related videos and any other non-tying fishing videos. Again, we're pretty busy this summer so please keep checking back.
Ok. So now for a few things news items.
Mike is currently in Bolivia shooting a recce for a possible film down there and doing some fishing. I'm currently neck deep in editing new patterns for the web and for a couple of DVD's.
Also, we are on the Twitter bandwagon. Check us out if you are in the Twitterverse by clicking on the Twitter icon twitter us
