Randy Says:

I have been tying flies since my wife taught me to tie 38 years ago. I have always been fascinated with woven patterns, in particular those originated by George Grant and Franz Pott.

Note on hackle construction: The length of the completed woven fibers should be approximately 3/16" for a size 10 hook and the lateral length of the five-fiber bunches woven onto the thread should be 7/8". When weaving of the entire hackle is completed, the deer hair butts should be trimmed to 1/2 the length of the hackle tips. Ideally the deer hair should be a minimum of 2" in length to facilitate weaving. However, deer hair this long, that is not too brittle to weave is hard to find. You can weave with shorter fibers (1 1/2") if necessary. Chris Helm at Whitetail Fly Tieing Supply (800-579-5549) is familiar with and can supply the type of deer hair needed for weaving.

Recipe:

  • Hook - Size 10 Mustad 94840 or similar standard dry fly hook. If and up-eye hook is preferred, Use a Size 10 Daiichi 2421
  • Weaving Thread - 6/0 Uni-thread
  • Tying Thread - 6/0 in appropriate color
  • Tail - Badger Guard Hairs
  • Body - Tying thread
  • Hackle - Northern Whitetail Deer Hair woven onto thread (George Grant hair-hackle weaving technique)
