Willy discovered his passion for fly fishing at the early age of six. Shortly thereafter, he began tying his own flies for trout, salmon steelhead, and shad. Willy found his love of lake fishing early and has continued to fish stillwaters, becoming known far and wide for his expertise and knowledge. He has fished all over northern California, Idaho, and Montana. From famous blue ribbon trout rivers to high mountain lakes and reservoirs, from farm ponds to the big lakes, Willy has guided for over twenty years in Montana and Yellowstone National Park. Willy has continued to develop his fly tying skills and is currently a signature tyer for Brookside Flies out of Denver, Co. He is the Assistant Manager of Montana Troutfitters of Bozeman. He uses any number of Echo fly rods to ply his craft, including their spey and switch rods and is currently working on the new design of Airflo fly lines for special presentation on lakes. Spey casting may be a new approach for lake fishermen in the US, but in Europe it is a common practice allowing for long distant casts from the shoreline.

The Brillo Pad is a heavy, weighted fly that is easy to tie and fun to fish. The fly is fished fast under the surface or down to about 24 inches, depending on the speed of the current, with three short, quick upward twitches of the rod tip intermingled with three short strips which individually collect slack that builds in the line between twitches. This is a streamer that is fished totally by sight, although some strikes are so vicious and explosive that visibility isn't necessary.

Recipe:

  • Hook: Mustad 9674 sizes 4 or 6
  • Thread: Danville's 3/0 waxed fly master thread
  • Bead: Brass, copper, or silver bead in 7/32 or 3/16
  • Weight: 4" strand .20 or .15 lead wire (optional)
  • Tail: Six to Eight strands Flashabou in brass, copper, or silver (match to bead)
  • Hackle: UV Polar Chenille in olive-copper ultraviolet, copper uv, uv silver, or clear
