Harley Reno's Brillo Pad - 7:37
Misc, Salmonid Flies, Streamers, By Fly Tyer, Harley Reno Send feedback »Harley W. Reno holds a B.S. and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Zoology (Specialty- sensory anatomy in fishes). He retired after 34 years of professorial duty as a biologist, environmental engineer, and systems engineer, and 25 years of Engineering and environmental duty in the oil, gas, and coal mining industries and nuclear waste management programs of the U.S. Department of Energy. He also spent 50 years guiding all over the United States, in Mexico, and Canada. He still floats and guides, although without remuneration, on rivers throughout the inter-montane west.
The Brillo Pad is a heavy, weighted fly that is easy to tie and fun to fish. The fly is fished fast under the surface or down to about 24 inches, depending on the speed of the current, with three short, quick upward twitches of the rod tip intermingled with three short strips which individually collect slack that builds in the line between twitches. This is a streamer that is fished totally by sight, although some strikes are so vicious and explosive that visibility isn't necessary.
Recipe:
- Hook: Mustad 9674 sizes 4 or 6
- Thread: Danville's 3/0 waxed fly master thread
- Bead: Brass, copper, or silver bead in 7/32 or 3/16
- Weight: 4" strand .20 or .15 lead wire (optional)
- Tail: Six to Eight strands Flashabou in brass, copper, or silver (match to bead)

Dave was born and raised in Great Falls and has spent his life fishing the waters of southwest Montana. He began his guiding career in 1985 on the Henry’s Fork, the South Fork of the Snake and the Teton in Idaho. In 1995, he moved closer to home when he guided on the famous Montana rivers around Yellowstone Park. In 2001 Dave returned to his home waters of the Missouri, which had been the river that captured his imagination since he first fished it as a youngster in 1971.
Up until the late 80’s, the Missouri River had yet to be discovered by the fishing magazines and the few outfitters that guided there held it as closely guarded secret. Dave has studied and fished it intently his entire angling life. Since this homecoming, he has been guiding on the Missouri in the summer and on the rivers of southern Chile and Argentina in the winter. Dave is also a nationally recognized fly-tier and his patterns are produced and sold by Idylwilde Flies.

Misc, Salmonid Flies, Nymphs, By Fly Type, By Fly Tyer, Rick Wollum Send feedback »Rick started flyfishing at the age of six, at an uncle's cabin in Minnesota for bluegill. Flyfishing quickly became a lifetime pursuit in Colorado, with Rick spending a lot of time fishing Colorado's South Platte while he attended Denver University. He then started guiding with mentor Steve Herter at Elk Trout lodge in Colorado, and later in Wyoming, Utah, and Montana. Rick guided Jackson Hole's One Fly for ten years, and also spent many summers guiding on Montana's Bighorn and Yellowstone Rivers. Later, Rick went on to host ESPN's FLY FISHING AMERICA, traveling and fishing extensively around the U.S. Rick has fished for trout, steelhead and salmon all over the world. If Rick has one passion in fishing, it's steelhead fishing with two handed spey rods. Rick is a great fly tier, and his classic spey flies are works of art. In the winter he works on the ski hills and in the summers he works at at George Anderson's Yellowstone Angler.

Misc, Salmonid Flies, Dry Flies, By Fly Type, By Fly Tyer, Marc Petitjean Send feedback »(NOTE: For those of you joining us from flytyer.wordpress.com please see the following post about our Free High Definition downloads offer. And thanks for dropping by.)
From Marc:
I learned to fish like the kids in the great movie "A River Runs Through It": Nearly 35 yearsMarc Petitjean ago - when I was a seven year old boy - my grandfather took me fishing for the first time . In France where we lived. I was allowed to catch little baitfish. Some years later - and with stronger arms - I caught my first trout and I remember it like yesterday. - The rod was 4 meters long, made out of Bamboo and the bait was a natural may-fly (Ephemera danica, imago) which had to be handled as carefully as a snow-flake. My first experiences of fly-fishing used an old split-cane rod of my grandfather and an even older line which had to be greased every five or ten casts! This was not a very efficient way to catch fish, but I learned a lot! In Switzerland, where I moved in 1978, I had my first contact with a cdc-fly. It was at a dinner among fishermen when my friend Bruno - who had poor eyesight - asked me to tie him a visible fly which floated nicely. Because I was very proud of that request and did not want to lose face I began a study of local cdc-flies. Those patterns used cdc-hackles, no wings and classical bodies made of silk or other materials. Worried, not wanting to copy those local flies, I developed a new concept of also tying the body with a cdc-feather: This product a perfect conical body, which floated even in riffles and rapids. Bruno and later many more fishermen in Europe, were very pleased with the simple but efficient new way to tie a fly. I have been a professional fly-tier since 1990 and today more and more anglers are convinced that those tiny and inconspicuous feathers are the best a fly fisherman can have wrapped around a hook: They are good for dry-flies, for emergers, for nymphs, for streamers and even for salmon flies or saltwater-patterns. I love them and think you will too!

CW’s CDC and Foam Green Drake Emerger - 13:34
Misc, Salmonid Flies, Nymphs, By Fly Type, By Fly Tyer, Chris Williams 1 feedback »This video is available as an HD DOWNLOAD at our store!
From Chris:
With regards to fly tying and fishing, I have done both since I was 9-years-old. Even with my rather limited math skills, I believe that translates to 40 years experience. Although I do fish and tie nymphs, my true passion is for dry fly-fishing, especially of the very small variety. Favorite hatches involve fishing baetis, midges, and tricos. I look upon fly-tying as a continually evolving process with new materials and new twists on old ties and methods emerging all of the time. My philosophy as a fly-tier is that tying is really a way of problem-solving. I spend a great deal of time on streams and lakes with much time being spent simply as an observer of entomology and nature. I try to come up with patterns that fit different situations, try to be innovative in the creation of flies to solve different problems, and I also try to learn from other individuals in order to be a better tier and fisherman.
While I certainly would not consider myself a famous tier or fly fisherman, I have been demonstrating fly-tying at expos (including the tremendous East Idaho Expo), fly club meetings, for community groups, and in shops for about the last eight years. Some of my flies have also been featured in Fly Fish America, and I am currently a member of Whiting's Pro Team. Also, I am currently producing a line of dry fly and emerger patterns that will be marketed by Riverborn Flies in 2010.
Over the years, I have been helped by many people to improve my skills as a tier and fly fisherman, and to those folks I owe a great debt of gratitude. I truly love this sport and as I grow to be a mature member of the fly tying and fishing community, it is one of my goals to pass on a little of the knowledge I have accumulated over the years.

His fishing experience covers the gamut, from bait fishing for catfish in the Maquoketa and Mississippi rivers, to plug fishing and fly fishing for Northern pike and Smallmouth Bass in the lakes of Canada, to fly fishing for trout in the cold waters of Australia, New Zealand, Poland, Czech Republic, and England, Sweden, France, Spain, Slovakia, Portugal, Finland and tigerfishing in the Zambezi river of Africa.
After moving to Jackson, Wyoming, in the late 60's, Jay turned his love of fishing into a career, guiding fisher people in the Jackson Hole area for nearly 35 years and owning and operating both a retail mail order fly fishing catalog and a fly fishing shop in Jackson.
For several years, Jay and Don Veirs, an entomologist from Logan, Utah, have taught Fly Fishing Entomology through the Teton Science School in Kelly, Wyoming. The class includes field work as well as lab work in identifying aquatic trout foods, fly tying demonstrations relating fly patterns to the "real thing," and fishing opportunities which put to practical use the knowledge learned about the insects and their life cycles.
Jay and his wife, Kathy, have one daughter, Chani, who is now 28 years of age. She enjoys her opportunities to go fly fishing with friends or family whenever she can.
The Buchners have been involved with Trout Unlimited and the Federation of Fly Fishers for many years, attending Conclaves, conventions and the like, demonstrating fly tying and promoting their various business adventures.
Their fly patterns and tying techniques have been featured in such publications as The Second Fly Tyer's Almanac (Boyle & Whitlock), The Book of Fly Patterns (Leiser), Tying Flies with Jack Dennis and Friends (Dennis), Fly Tyer magazine, Fly Fisherman magazine and American Angler magazine.

Howard Cole Yellow Sally Emerger - 17:12

Howard Cole started fly fishing over 35 years ago and has been tying flies nearly as long. He has tied flies at numerous events including the Federation of Fly Fishermen Conclave and the Eastern Idaho Fly Tying Expo. Some of his original flies have been published in books like Emergers and Flies of the West. He currently lives with his wife and daughter in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and where he is co-owner of High Country Flies.
Cole says: “Living in the Yellowstone Area, I never take for granted having one of the world’s most diverse trout fisheries right in my backyard. The plain truth is: Trout live in the most beautiful places. Simply observing the subtle rings left by a rising fish, rouses the same emotion that I had when I first came to this sport.”
Please take a look at Howard's site: http://www.flyfishingjacksonhole.com for trips, gear, and info as well as flies and fly tying materials.
RECIPE:
- Hook: Tiemco 5212BL #12-#16
- Thread: Uni-Thread 8/0 Tan
- Undertail: Z-lon Amber
- Tail: Wood Duck Flank Fibers
- Abdomen: 1/3 Dubbing Flourescent Orange 2/3 Dubbing Creamy Yellow
- Wing: Z-lon Dun
- Thorax: Dubbing Creamy Yellow
- Hackle: CDC Light Dun
- Wing Case: Ethafoam Thin
"I believe the Flourescent Orange Butt of this fly is a Hot Spot or Trigger Mechanism to trout. I have fished this fly with and without the Orange Butt and swear the fly fishes better with it. One of the little known riddles to many Fly Fishermen is not all Stoneflies crawl out of the water and hatch on land. Like Mayflies and Caddis, some Stoneflies actually hatch in the water. The Little Yellow Sally (Isoperla) is one of them. Sometimes, matching the emerging lifecycle stage of this insect can be invaluable. Most of the waters in the Yellowstone area will harbor this insect, but on waters like the South Fork, Madison, Firehole, and Yellowstone this bug can be extremely important with prolific hatches. "

Recipe:
- Hook: Tiemco 900BL #12 & #14
- Thread: Uni-Thread 8/0 Gray
- Tail: Micro-Fibetts Brown or Dark Dun
- Underbody: Gray Thread
- Body: Flexi-Floss Brown or Super Floss Brown
- Wing: Teal Flank Fibers
- Hackle: Sadddle or Cape Hackle Cree
An aspect that makes this fly unique is how the body is formed. Make a smooth tapered Underbody with the Gray Thread. Then over the top, Palmer the Flexi-Floss forward evenly and leave a space between each wrap. This will present a ribbed effect from the Gray Thread, giving the body segmented look. Though Western March Browns (also referred to as Rhithrogena or Rhiths) are the first large mayfly of the season, they are a fickle insect. A lot of our western waters have this mayfly, but some years the hatch can be insignificant while others years quite memorable. Year after year the Bitterroot, Clark Fork, and Yakima normally have consistent hatches. Commonly this mayfly is found in faster sections of rivers and streams. Also, generally it takes awhile for the fish to turn on to the adults but once they do they can really key in on this insect.
